Friday tip #2: Treat every client like they are the only one

Make it your aim to give each client the very best service you can. 5 star each time, all the way, to the very end of the project. It doesn’t matter if it’s a quick bread and butter job or your portfolio star.

Aim to be on the end of the phone, clarify corrections or changes in direction with clear emails, provide opportunities for changes etc. Be nice. Friendly. Helpful. Knowledgeable. Patient. Witty.

This is a tough one. An older, wiser businessman gave me that one piece of advice when I asked him how to make a success of my graphic design business, The Urban Design Office. It challenged me beyond belief. I could not see how I could do that and still make a profit on smaller jobs or with clients who suck the life out of you at every proof delivery. It would mean that when I originally estimated a project would take 10 working days of my time, instead, under this new guideline, it would take 15. Nightmare.

But I believe it’s absolutely true. Most of my new business / internal career progression / head hunting has been done from word of mouth. Personal recommendation. There’s nothing better.
