Blog in, Blog out, but keep on blogging

*I recently attended “Log in, Blog to, Log out“, an event in London designed to inform on intellectual copyright issues and act as a networking event for bloggers.

Protecting me, protecting you

At first, I was apprehensive. This event was put on by Own It who’s focus is on the protection or exploitation of intellectual property. Not very interesting but I thought it would be a very useful subject to know about. The last thing I want to do is put a lot of hard work into blogging and have someone steel my ideas or work. No one likes that. So, I dutifully attended, thinking I would be filled with amazing insight into how to protect my hard work and at the same time avoid falling foul of online IP laws.

Miss-sold

But does that really matter? Robert Lands spoke about intellectual property but Dan Hon was completely off topic. Dan spoke mostly about his own blog world, and stimulated thinking on where blogs are going. At first, I was disappointed as I had attended solely to gain insight into IP. It was a good evening. Own It are very well organised.

Don’t blog, twitter? Or not…

The IP part of the session was well presented and a good insight into the subject. Podcasts to follow. Watch this space. Particularly interesting was Dan Hon’s point of view. He no longer has time to blog and sees applications like Twitter as a much more useful, speedier way of sharing information and entering into semi-private dialogue with closed groups. For him, the power of being able to share but limit access, combined with speed is important. For deeper analysis and traditional online content publishers however, the blog remains safe. Long form content still has it’s place online and blogs will change the way traditional publishers like MSN, Yahoo!, New York Times deliver content.
